How do you replicate the massive success that was Swedish House Mafia? While the members of the now defunct group may find it difficult to live up to lofty expectations, Axwell seems to have found the answer. You don’t replicate anything at all.
His latest remix takes Mutiny UK’s “Feel The Pressure” to a whole different place, largely as it sounds, thanks to NEW_ID (formally NO_ID before legalities forced them to re-register). The track still soars on a big room sound, but it’s not the power progressive ballad you might expect from Axwell. Instead, the track rushes with euphoria by way of a grooving house undertow and dancing chords. In an interview with Dancing Astronaut, NEW_ID put it best. “The big room sound simply doesn’t have to be all hard kicks and big synths […] Our music has always been centered on the big grooves and nice melodies because that is the sound we come from.”
With NEW_IDs touch of modern minimalism, the notorious sound that made Axwell and SHM so popular takes on new life. Axwell’s previous release “I Am”, in addition to SHM vocalist John Martin’s new “Anywhere For You” are great tracks, but they’re part of the past.
