Calvin Harris’ new track is brimming with life. Splashed with violins, electric guitars, xylophones, and wah-wah pedals, who could resist “Summer”? It’s an attractive track no doubt, but is it really your true summer anthem?
The Scottish-born producer has been bouncing through the charts since 2007 on track after track of simple-but-powerful playfulness. “Summer” is more of the same. And after releasing singles featuring Ellie Goulding, Florence Welch, and Ayah Marar, Calvin Harris returns to his roots by providing his own voice. The result is genuine and intimate with a warm familiarity.
But for a guy who has gained fame through his casual energy, “Summer” also seems to try to hard. The different instruments help build an imaginative environment for the track, but it’s just a bit too much. In other words, the seasonally-titled track is laying it on pretty thick.
“Summer” might not be your one summer anthem, but it’ll work as a fling. Even with room for improvement, Calvin Harris’ experimentation with accent instruments should be applauded and followed. He is without a doubt a brilliant talent, and despite it’s imperfections, his new track is yet another example of this. Listen below and pick it up on iTunes Tuesday (March 18th).
